The figure is iridescent on both sides. The colors are exciting on this magnificent container. Just as the buffalo itself is magnificent. Double Lotus
This lovely bowl is one of my most popular. I have carved the rim in the lotus pattern, but I added a second carving the give the edge a more three dimensional appearance. It measures 12″ in diameter and 3.5″ height.

It comes only in one size, 12 inch diameter and one color, sea green, but the alternate petals are dark blue. Some tell me it reminds them of ginkgo leaves.

Earth’s Spirit Dawns
The raku process leaves its mark on the clay as no other firing method does. When the piece comes out of the kiln at about 1750 degrees F, it is put into sawdust, which immediately ignites. This after burn leaves its mark reminding me of the celestial fires that produced our plant and all of the heaven’s wonders. Here is a vessel that bares the marks of such an after burn. I added a handle to its lid reminiscent of a living creature, applied shiny glaze to it and the side patterns, then to complete the ancient look I added feathers similar to what our early ancestors would have used.
Size: 8″ ht x 8″ dia.

Making Waves Spirit Jar
What a fun ocean creature is the dolphin! Playful, jumping, splashing, chattering, truly making waves. Here is my figure representing our fabulous friend. I used my matte glaze on most of this jar, which once fired, turned into waves of colors in motion around this whole piece. When I added adornment, I chose my own lamp worked glass beads, which themselves have swirling colors. These “jewels,” picked up this same waves theme giving this spirit jar a further motion.

Photo 1 Loading the Raku Kiln
This photo shows me putting various pieces into the kiln I built. They have been bisqued (the first firing, sets pots up to be glazed), glazed and ready to be loaded in the kiln. The large kiln is a gas fired and takes about 3-4 hours to fire, reaching 1750°F. The large white pot I am handling is white clay and will be followed throughout these photos.
Not for sale.
Photo 2 Opening the Raku Kiln
This photo shows the kiln has reached 1750°F and the door has begun to be taken down. You can see how hot the fire is. The pot we are following is in the right hand corner.

Photo 3 Raku Kiln with the Door Totally Off
This photos show the kiln with the door fully taken down giving me full access to take the pots out. I use tongs for the most part, but large sculptural pieces are picked up by hand using heavy Kevlar gloves.

Photo 4 Pots Being Removed
Next stage of Raku firing is removing the pieces from the kiln and putting them into some combustible material. I place them in “smoking chambers” containing sawdust which immediately ignites. I then dump more sawdust on top of the pot and close the lid. Without oxygen, the chamber smokes bringing out all the lush colors and trapping carbon in the exposed clay.

Photo 5 Pots the Chamber
This photo shows me covering the pot with more sawdust and how immediately the sawdust ignites. It is a tall piece, so the smoking chamber is set a bit on its side. Once enough sawdust is added, the can is covered and up-righted.

Photo 6 Finished Piece
Here is the finished product. It has been scrubbed with soap and steel wool, then sealed to keep the colors from fading. The glazes are a wonderful mix of copper, blues, pinks and white crackle. The exposed clay is quite black.

Red Giant
This vessel is tall and lean with a distinctive red glow flashed on the surface by fire starved for oxygen. It has a rare silvery bluish rim. I applied three thumb elements on indented lines on three equidistant areas on the body. Each was glazed the same glaze on the rim, to pick up that color theme and carrying it into the body of the vase.

Wading for Breakfast
This picture represents early morning fishing with this cowboy wanting trout for breakfast. Swift waters and haze from early morning before the sun has burned it off sets the scene.

I love this scene, quite, pensive, beautiful promising day. Looking at it makes the challenges I face easier as I reflect on it , going through daily work.
Washington Crossing Bridge
The current iconic Washington Crossing Bridge was built in 1904 replacing earlier versions which were wooden and sweep away during floods. This bridge has had several repairs though these many years. It is narrow and can be a challenge to cross for a wider vehicle. The waters traveling under make an idyllic picture to paint. I’m sure it has been done many, many times. This is my interpretation of it.
oil painting on canvas, 14″ x 11″

How many times have I crossed this bridge? I don’t dared to count. One tucks in the rear view mirrors and drives slowly across. My joke is always the same. “Why did Washington cross in boats when there is a perfectly good bridge here!” LOL.

Waves Bowl
Waves bowl with incised and folded rim.
When I designed this piece, I wanted the three dimensional look in two facets. First the water droplet shapes and then cutting through the rim and folding the tip of the droplets behind the rim and securing them. With this bowl, in your mind’s ear, you can practically hear the ocean as the wave pattern flows around the edge of this beautiful bowl.
